Putting Christ at the Center

BRIEF HISTORY OF ST. JAMES ACADEMY

St. James Academy in 1926

St. James Academy of Malabon City is a premier Catholic school, offering quality Christian Education
from Kindergarten to Grade 12.Its existence is traced back to the year 1925, when Archbishop Michael O’Doherty of Manila,
conceived to put up a Catholic Teachers’ training institution named Malabon Normal School,
with the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic to manage the school. It was the first institution established by the Sisters who officially start opening its doors in June 1926.

In April 1936, the Normal School and the Pre-school departments were moved to Isaac Peral St., Manila, now the United Nations Avenue. This was the nucleus of the Maryknoll College which is known today as the Miriam College in Quezon City.
The elementary remained in Malabon and was renamed St. James Academy, after St. James the Greater, patron saint of Bishop James Anthony Walsh, M.M., the founder of the Maryknoll Congregation, with the Maryknoll Sisters still supervising the institution.

After 54 years of presence, the Maryknoll Sister in 1980, turned over the management of St. James Academy to the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, upon the approval of His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin, the Archbishop of Manila. The new administration saw the need to provide more classrooms and other facilities for the growing number of students.
Hence in 1984, San Lorenzo Ruiz Building was constructed to house the Auditorium, more classrooms, and the Cafeteria. In 1994-1996, St. Albert the Great Building was also put up to house the Speech Laboratory, the Science Laboratories, the Gymnasium, and more classrooms. Then, in June, 2007, the Niña Maria Building was inaugurated and blessed by Bishop Deogracias S. Iñiguez, Jr. D.D. It provided more classrooms and a big Chapel.
It was also during this administration that PAASCU accreditation was initially worked out.
In 2002, the Night High School was opened as a form of community extension services.
It offers free quality education to the less privileged and out-of-school youth from public schools.

After 30 years of presence, the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, upon the approval of the Most Rev. Deogracias S. Iñiguez, D.D.hand-over to the Dominican Sisters of the Trinity the management of the school on May 29, 2010. On February 5, 2016, the Most Rev. Pablo Virgilio S. David, D.D. being the new Bishop of Kalookan Diocese, took over the Chairmanship of the Board of Trustees.

The new management saw the need for the continuous improvements of its facilities, by adopting it to the modern trends for the technology assisted instruction.
It also worked for the continuous improvement of the quality of instruction, its faculty and staff, and other services, by working for accreditation. On May 30, 2013, the Basic Education Program got its first Five-Year Level II PAASCU Accreditation under the leadership of Sr. Aida T. Frencillo, O.P.It was revisited on February 14 -15, 2019 and got re-accredited its 2nd Five-Year Level II on June 18, 2019 under the directorship of Sr. Nanita M. Handugan, O.P.
The Night High School was also formally accredited by Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) on September 29, 2015, and re-accredited on October 9, 2019. Since then, it enjoyed the privilege of the government Education Service Contracting (ESC) scheme of the Department of Education.

In SY 2020-2021 when the Covid-19 pandemic had swift the country and the world, the school opted for an online distance learning modality with the use of Learning Management System, coupled with the use of textbooks and journals.
All transactions and activities were done virtually, including students spiritual, social, psychological and intellectual activities. This modality was extended to SY 2021-2022. In SY 2022-2023, it opted for blended modality.
Through the years, the school had been true to its identity and mission. It continued to be a beacon I ight for the children and the youth who are growing into responsible citizens of the country, committed disciples of Jesus Christ, and devoted members of Christ’s Body, the Church.

THE SEAL OF ST. JAMES ACADEMY

The Icon of St. James the Greater on a horseback at the center of the logo.
He is portrayed to be strong and holy, firm but gentle. It epitomizes the institution’s very strong foundation, since its beginning in 1926. His face of holiness shows the call of Jesus to be holy like Him. It is firm because St. James Academy has withstood the test of time in war and in trials and jubilation. His gentleness connotes the love, the admiration and respect of the local community that it serves.
● The Sword. It is a reminder of St. James’ heroic death. It is a challenge to all of us to be faithful and courageous for Christ’s sake. Its forward thrust impels us to continuously move forward and strive for excellence.
● The Shield. Like St. James we should be able to defend strongly our Christian Catholic faith.

The Dominican Cross symbolizes the Dominican Sisters of the Trinity’s unwavering administration of the school adhering to the Dominican ideals of Passion for Truth and Compassion for Humanity. The cross itself symbolizes Christ, the center of our life and work.

The Four Symbols in the box convey the following meanings:
